The video at the bottom of this page has the full detailed plans for the DIY Solar Powered Water Heater. Below you'll find an overiew of the steps involved and the materials needed.
Step 1: Use an old hot water tank as the new tank to store the water.
Step 2: Choose a piece of glass to use and prepare it to fit in the frame.
Step 3: Build an aluminum frame around your glass and be sure to include a rubber gasket around the glass.
Step 4: Build the sides of the frame with 2x4's.
Step 5: Cap the ends of each side of the frame with beadboard.
Step 6: Build the rest of the frame and connect both sides. Build the front and cap it with beadboard.
Step 7: Build the inner-frame at an angle where the tank can rest.
Step 8: Add the back to the inner-frame.
Step 9: Add insulation to the inner-frame and attach with staples.
Step 10: Use galvanized roofing material for the inner lining of the frame.
Step 11: Spray paint the entire interior of the frame black and insert the tank. The tank can rest on a latch but should be secured with a strap.
Step 12: Attach your aluminum frame with glass insert.
Step 13: Connect the plumbing (see video below for full instructions).
